In our fourth year, we granted $10,000 to Pretty Purposed, a nonprofit based in Petersburg which focuses on empowering girls through mentorship and group activities to foster healthy physical, social, and emotional development.
The nonprofit offers community and school-based programming to girls where members complete team building exercises, lessons, and personal reflections. The organization will use the funds from our $10,000 grant to fund a new program called “Purpose Groups,” two-hour weekly small groups conducted over the course of four-to-six weeks for girls in Central Virginia! 2018 Recipient of $10,000
In our third year, we granted $10,000 to HomeAgain Richmond, whose mission is to assist families and individuals experiencing homelessness in maintaining a home, again.
HomeAgain is using our funds to renovate their Family Shelter Learning Center that provides a safe, calm environment for youth staying in the shelter to relax, do homework and escape the chaos associated with staying in a shelter. So far this year, we have had many opportunities to collaborate and are excited about all the rest of our partnership has in store.
YoungLives Metro Richmond
2017 Recipient of $10,000
In our second year, we granted $10,000 to YoungLives Metro Richmond. YoungLives is a branch of YoungLife specifically designed to be a support group and ministry for teen moms. Additionally, YoungLives provides the traditional Young Life experiences of Club, Campaigners, and Camp for teen moms while also matching the teens with a mature Christian woman who serves as a mentor to help support, guide, and encourage them through this unique and often challenging times in their life. The mentors are able to share Christ’s love and compassion with the girls while also walking with them through the challenges of being a teen mother.
Our grant money went towards both their general fund and to support their girls as they went to camp this summer. YoungLives has been the perfect fit as a partners in philanthropy. Their ministry has widened our perspective, and we have enjoyed attending events such as their annual banquet, camp cookouts, mother/daughter tea parties, and volunteering at child care at weekly club meetings. The Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation
2016 Recipient of $10,000
In March 2016, We gave away our first $10,000 grant to “The Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation.”
CKG’s mission is to fulfill Cameron’s dream and legacy by being a positive force that works to cultivate awareness and understanding of teenage depression and anxiety.
The organization was started after Cameron, a 16-year-old girl, passed away at the end of a half marathon. “Cameron was a bright and talented teenager. Although ever-smiling, she faced her own personal battles with depression and anxiety. She began to grow weary of keeping her struggles a private battle and knew that there were many teens just like her who were in great pain behind closed doors. Her dream was to create a 5k race in her community to raise awareness of teenage depression. She began making plans for the race and titled the race the SpeakUp5k in order to draw attention to the issue of teen depression. She wanted to let other teens like herself know that it was okay to “SpeakUp” about their personal battles.
As our grantee, CKG was able to fund the “Minding Your Mind” Program as part of their “Peer Support Curriculum” initiative with the goal of providing mental health education to middle and high school teens, their parents, teachers, and school administrators. Over the school year, CKG was able to reach 24,000 people with this program.
CKG continues to be a blessing to Girl Power Grants. Every year, we run the SpeakUp 5k, and attend many of their events as volunteers. One of our members was so inspired by their mission, in Spring 2017, she made it her own goal to raise $13,000 for the organization, and even shaved her head to raise awareness.
